Apple has been known to be quite versatile in the apps front but Google is proving to be a very worthy opponent in the same respect. This is so due to the massive advancements that have been made in the recent past concerning the technologies and apps that are used in the devices that are released into the market.

In the field of navigation maps, Google has been very instrumental in ensuring that they provide apps that are quite detailed and give a turn by turn direction. The apps also incorporate transit directions that are responsible for showing people the way through the different paths that can be used in the transit and subways.

Google has incorporated close to a million stations which serve the respective state that a person is in. Apple has failed to deliver on this aspect of navigation maps and this has led to complete dominance of this sector by the Google apps.

Apple apps have the capability to launch a probe on another app in the same operating system. This has been the major advantage of Apple over Google since one can be able to operate on different platforms all on the same device and operating system.

Google is close on this occasion as it has been able to interlink apps in the Google store and this has made intercommunication between apps possible.

In the Google app store, most, if not all apps are free and hence one can be able to download them for free. This has been a major boost for the android operating system users since their apps can be acquired easily.

Apple apps on the other hand have been characterized as being very expensive and the free ones represent less than a quarter of the whole lot of apps. Furthermore, the apps that are free are not the fundamentally useful ones.

In smart phones, the aspect of having a social platform that is intertwined and effective is a value that anyone can dream of. This therefore means that the apps provided by the stores are supposed to facilitate for this increased level of socialization.

In Google, the perfect platform has been set since the required apps are staged and they provide for viewing and notification of any activity in the social sites. Apple apps have failed to establish the required level of freedom in the social setting since the apps that are available are served by third party hosts which often require payment once a service has been rendered.

Streaming of music photos and movies has all been catered for adequately in both Google and Apple apps. However, Apple has taken steps to enhance the way in which people get to watch and enjoy the different media in their devices.

This has made them get an upper hand in the sector. In general, apple apps are self-centered and are expensive to obtain though they are customized and effective. This therefore leaves Google with the lion’s share of the apps market for the Smartphones.

1. Gizmondo

The Gizmondo was a handheld gaming console that entered production in March 2005 and was discontinued in February 2006. It was heavily marketed and gaming enthusiasts expected it to be a huge commercial success. Fewer than 25,000 units were ever sold and GamePro Magazine describes the Gizmondo as the worst handheld gaming console of all time.

2. Dell Notebooks

Dell notebooks manufactured in 2006 had a tendency to catch on fire, prompting Dell to recall more than 4 million of these devices. The problem was eventually traced to a defect in the lithium-ion batteries, which were made by Sony. This was the most visible example of poor product quality from Dell, which dramatically reduced the size of its operations in 2007.

3. Virtual Boy

The Nintendo Virtual Boy was a tabletop gaming console made in 1995 that was supposed to provide true 3-D graphics. Its uncomfortable ergonomics and monochromatic display caused Nintendo to cease production on this console after only one year.

4. Ariane 5

The Ariane 5 rocket cost the European Space Agency $7 billion and 10 years to develop. It exploded 37 seconds after launch when the onboard guidance computer attempted to convert a 64-bit number to a 16-bit number.

5. Betamax

The Sony Betamax format for videotape was defeated by the VHS format during the videotape format wars of the late 1970s and 1980s. A series of technical problems and marketing mistakes caused Sony to cease production of Betamax tapes in 1988 after investing millions of dollars in this technology.

6. DIVX

DIVX was an alternative system for video rental developed by Circuit City in 1998. It was discontinued after only one year when DIVX disc manufacturers began making DVDs. The failure of DIVX cost Circuit City more than $114 million after taxes.

7. HD DVD

HD DVD was a DVD format that was used from 2006 to 2008. It lost its market share to Blu-ray due primarily to customer confusion and indifference.

8. HDD Manufacture

Hard disk drives are an extremely successful technological development, but almost of all of the HDDs in the world are manufactured within a small area of Thailand. The consequences of this lack of geographic diversification became evident when a flood caused a severe disruption in HDD production during the fourth quarter of 2011.

9. Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever is a video game that was released in 2011 after 15 years of development. It received scathing reviews due its aging design and long load times, so the publisher’s PR firm threatened to withhold future review copies from critics who had panned the game. The publisher of Duke Nukem Forever, 2K Games, subsequently fired the PR firm.

10. Microsoft Bob

Bob was a software product designed to provide a non-technical interface for desktop computers. It was released in 1995 as part of Windows 95 and was also discontinued in that year. Bob is one of Microsoft’s most significant product failures.
