Types Of Advocacy Offered By A Disability Advocate

The purpose of disability advocates is to help the disabled by advocating for them or doing it for themselves. Disability is termed as such when there is impairment affecting mental, physical and sensory capabilities of a person and their daily life in general.

Disability advocates have a role in protecting their client’s rights. Disability advocates either do it for free or work to be paid. There are many different types of advocacy that they do which are; individual, group, self, citizen and systemic advocacy.

Self advocacy involves the person suffering from disability advocating for themselves.

Group advocacy involves advocacy done for a group of people who are affected by disability or suffering from it.

Individual advocacy involves an approach that is usually one on one for the individual affected to address various issues and is normally done by a professional advocate.

Citizen advocacy happens when a disabled person needs representation and the community offers up a person who volunteers to do it.

This happens when there is system following legislation, practices and policies in the fighting for the rights of the disabled.

The duties of the advocates includes; helping in the negotiation process when the infringement of those has occurred to enforce them, they assist in the creation and raising awareness to other people or organizations touching on disability on behalf of the disabled, they have a hand in helping the government when it comes to issues that are involving people with disabilities, they help campaign for change and awareness to various media platforms and also raise the alarm in the instances where the disabled are not treated well, provision of information to disabled people about what rights they have and how to know when those rights are infringed.

Considerations to make in terms of the necessary skill set that the disability advocate must have involves; have understanding, and operate together with having an understanding of the law, communication and support for the disabled, running good campaigns which are effective and efficient, negotiation skills, and in their advocacy they apply the human rights approach.

Having a disability advocate is beneficial in; safety, education, health, employment and income.

The disability advocates have the benefit of creation of employment and earning income for the disabled by fighting for them to get employment opportunities in all sectors of the workforce.

Education is also promoted by the advocates by fighting for them to get an education and creating awareness for them.

The advocates have a hand in better healthcare for the disabled through the adamant efforts in ensuring they receive better healthcare.
